Want to get out of some of your college classes, and still get credit for them?

If you’ve been looking into college, or perhaps you are already enrolled, there is a way you can get out of some of your classes. Most Advisors I’ve met don’t mention this excellent secret where you can get credit for classes without taking the class.  It’s called a CLEP exam.

A number of  regionally accredited colleges will accept the CLEP exam, or they will have their own placement exams where you can pass a test and get the college credit for the class.

This is a Fantastic benefit to you, check out what this does for you.

A CLEP exam allows you to:

  • Save Money, you only typically pay for the exam which is around $70.00 currently. So you generally get three credits for the price of the exam. Compare that to the average cost of a college credit hour and you’ve just saved yourself a nice chunk of change.
  • Save Time, now that you don’t have to take the class you can take another instead.
  • Get ahead in your studies, if you use the CLEP Exam to pass entrance and basic courses then you can begin studying your major that much sooner. Thus your motivation stays high and you finish faster.
  • Graduate faster- Less classes means less time in college.

I can just see the questions forming, how, what, when, where etc.

Ah, I knew this would peak your interest. :)

The CLEP Exam is an exam where you take a subject, review the subject matter and take a test such as the final that demonstrates your proficiency in the subject matter. Passing the test gives you a score you present to your Admissions Advisor to have added to your transcript.

Important Note: When you receive your score, don’t look at the result based on a scale of 100. It’s not, so if you look at the point system and see a score you don’t like. Don’t worry; there is a special formula for calculating these tests. Each college has as a different requirement for passing. Find out from your Advisor what this is so that you’ll have a better idea of how this ranked for you.

Some colleges have a placement test that you can take which will allow you to get out of certain classes. This is a great tool to have in addition to the CLEP exam.

Word of Caution: If you take a placement test with a college it is specific just to that college. If you transfer schools the placement test will not. This is true for any college specific exam that is not a national exam. So if you transfer colleges and you took a college specific entrance exam then this will not transfer with you, often you’ll need to take the entrance exam again. This is of course dependent on the college. So ask your Admissions Advisor for the details as you consider each college.

So are you ready to get credit for classes you haven’t even taken?

Go to this site and find subjects you believe you can test out of.

One last thing, and this is essential. Find out if your college accepts CLEP, get a list of the ones they accept. The last thing you want is a surprise on this one. You finish your exam, you know you did well and then find out your college won’t accept it.

  1. The CLEP system is great. I was able to save myself some time with it. My high school allowed all students to take it. This is a great post. I will definitely Twitter it. :-)

I appreciate your comments, and the tweet! I am so glad that you find this helpful. I think the CLEP Exam is under utilized. I want to shout it from the roof tops. In my opinion this is one of the best time, an money savers in college education.

I agree, CLEP is a time and money saver. I did a lot of CLEP for my degree and am now taking some more exams in place of leveling courses for the MBA I’m going to start next year.

    Good stuff!
