Education without college

Okay so perhaps you know that college is not right for you, but you know that you need to learn more to keep up on your job or to get ahead.

No worries, let’s take a look at resources that are not so obvious. Trade School, now this can be a little confusing. This type of learning is where you learn a specific subject, such as how to work on a car for example. This type of education is great for someone who finds themselves at odds with ‘traditional’ education.

  1. Apprentice, define exactly what you want to do. Are you looking to move up in a company? Or perhaps you want to tackle a new career all together? Well who would you consider to be an expert in this field?

If you don’t know then look around, you may find someone very close, ask them if you can spend time with them learning what they do. Take time to learn what makes them an expert, why do you consider them an expert?

Defining this is important so that you know exactly what you want to learn from them.

  1. Don’t leave any stone unturned. Some of our best untapped resources are those who are retired in our community, they are a wealth of information and knowledge; ask someone who had a career in your field of interest if they’ll teach you. In my experience often they’re eager to impart knowledge.
  2. Did you know that there is often a community center that has classes where you can learn specific skills? Check with your local community center and ask if they offer anything like this and if they don’t they’ll often be able to direct you to someone, or someplace that will help you.

Do you need a specific set of classes to fulfill a job requirement, or are you looking to add to your repertoire of skills?

  1. A certificate might be a great option for you; there are typically several courses that you take to get a certain amount of information, over a given period of time.

The instruction can be a combination of study on your own and or working with an expert. The time it takes to complete the programs varies depending on what you choose to study and how in depth the curriculum goes.
